Brown Creeper

January 18th

This morning Mike and I went to Oak Openings Window on Wildlife.  We were hoping to see a Pine Siskin but didn’t find any.  Then we went for a short walk in the woods to look for a Brown Creeper but again no luck.  We went back to the feeders and there at the base of a large tree was the Brown Creeper!

The Brown Creeper is a member of the Treecreeper family.  It is small and delicate with a long tail and slender curved bill.  It is almost always seen clinging to the bark of a large tree.  It creeps up the tree and feeds on insects and spiders.  It is found in mature woods, particularly wet shaded areas.  Its call is very high, thin and quavering similar to a Golden-crowned Kinglet. (1 new species, total 106)
