January 14th

This morning we went to Woodlawn Cemetery to join Sherry Plessner’s weekly bird walk.  It was good to be with other birders, but we didn’t see anything out of the ordinary except a Fox Sparrow.

After the bird walk, our next stop was Bay View Park to look for unusual gulls.  While Mike was busy scoping the hordes of gulls on the ice, I started looking around for other birds.  I spotted a Yellow-rumped Warbler, but by the time Mike came to look, the bird was gone.  When one birder sees a bird and another does not, you both feel bad.   We’ll have to find another one as soon as possible.

After lunch at home, we went to Secor Park.  While driving into the park, we saw a large flock of Cedar Waxwings.  We got great looks and nice pictures of these handsome birds.  Our real target here was a Pileated Woodpecker.  We took a trail through the large old growth trees which is prime habitat for these woodpeckers.  Just as we were starting to get discouraged, we heard the raucous call of the pileated.  We followed the sound and were able to track her

down.  This is one of my favorite birds and I always love to see them.  (3 new birds, total 92)
