Today our plan was to go see another rare hummingbird right here in Toledo. This Rufous Hummingbird has been here for at least a month. We had already seen the bird but needed to see her in the new year. We arrived about 8:30am and within a few minutes she came to the heated hummingbird feeder for her breakfast.
After our bird-filled weekend, today was supposed to be more relaxed. We were just going to look for a few target birds and be home for lunch. We went to Salisbury Quarry and saw a few ducks and two Mute Swan decoys and then checked Hidden Harbor. Next, we stopped at the new Sandhill Crane Wetland but didn’t see much because it was frozen.
Then we headed to the lakeshore where we saw hundreds of Scaup and Common Mergansers. The highlight was a tip from another birder about a Winter Wren which we were able to locate. This was the first time we’ve seen this bird in January. On the way home, we saw a tree full of roosting Black-crowned Night-Herons near the Bayshore Power Plant. We never ate lunch, survived on a couple of granola bars, and got home at 3:30pm. Tomorrow will be a day off! (14 new species, 58 total)
