Birding Adventures - Florida Extension

March 7th

Right now, our Ohio bird total is stuck on 129 species.  Our recent chases have been unsuccessful, and our local birding has also been unproductive.  This means it’s time to take a break and go on vacation.  We are driving to Florida and will be gone for two weeks.  This is not primarily a birding trip, but I decided to document our birding highlights.

We left the house yesterday morning about 7:00am.  Mike and I usually share the driving on a long trip which we did.  The trip was long but uneventful with the exception of a steady rain as we drove through Kentucky.  It was interesting to see signs of Spring as we continued south.  In Tennessee, we noticed that some of the deciduous trees were just starting to leaf out.  In Georgia, the temperature hit 80 degrees and some of the flowering trees including a redbud were in full bloom.

The biggest highlight of the drive was listening to our Michigan Wolverine men’s basketball team defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Hopefully, this victory will help punch our ticket to the NCAA tournament.

I was not focusing on birds as we drove, but we saw many Crows and a few Turkey Vultures flying around.  I heard a House Finch singing away when we made a pit stop at a McDonalds.  When we arrived at our motel in Macon, Georgia, the first thing I heard was a Mockingbird.

I’m writing this at 4:00am because I can’t sleep.  Today will be a busy birding day.  We will be making a detour to St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge near Tallahassee in search of a Flamingo that has been hanging around there.  More to follow on our birding adventures (Florida Extension).

  1. 80 degrees, that sounds so comfortable. Really looking forward to spring here.
