April Summary

April Summary

Our birding results at the beginning of April were slow but steady when we would typically pick up one, two or three birds whenever we went out.  By the last week in April things picked up considerably.  We saw a total of 76 new birds during the month bringing our total on April 30th to 216 species for the year.

When we took our trip down to Shawnee State Park, we saw a total of 27 new species including some of our target birds listed below:

Northern Bobwhite                       Kentucky Warbler

Cerulean Warbler                         Yellow-throated Warbler

Worm-eating Warbler                   Prairie Warbler

Louisiana Waterthrush                 Broad-winged Hawk

We saw a total of 19 warblers during the month of April partially because of the trip to southern Ohio.

Rare or notable birds are listed below:

          American White Pelican               Lincoln’s Sparrow

          Black-necked Stilt                        Northern Bobwhite

          Smith’s Longspur                         Hudsonian Godwit

          Brewer’s Blackbird                       Glossy Ibis

A lot of migrants will continue to move through the area in the next two to three weeks.
