Birding Adventures - Alberta, Canada Extension
June
20th
Mike and I arose at 3:30am this morning
to drive to Detroit Metro to catch a flight to Minneapolis. We had a 4 ½ hour layover to get our
connecting flight to Calgary. We decided
to pay for the Delta Sky Club which was a good decision. It had comfortable chairs and plenty of
coffee and food. Both flights were on
time, and we arrived in Calgary about 2:00pm mountain time. Our rental car was fine, and we went straight
to the Hampton Inn to check in, change and drop off our luggage.
Then we went to the Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary in Calgary but the whole place was closed for habitat
restoration. We ended up walking on a
bike trail nearby and saw a few new birds including Black-billed Magpies, a
Swainson’s Hawk, Franklin’s Gulls and singing Clay-colored Sparrows.
By 5:00pm we were starting to fade and
decided to go for an early dinner at a restaurant called the Cactus Club Café. It was really excellent. We are in Alberta to see the scenery in the
beautiful Canadian Rockies and of course to find some birds. I decided to continue the blog while we are
away even though none of these western birds will count for our Ohio Big Year. I can’t go into any detail about the birds
tonight because I’m too tired. More to
come later.

There's a town called New Dayton in Alberta named by settlers from Ohio. Maybe you can count birds you see there as close relations.
