Flat Tire

July 21st

This morning Mike and I left the house at 6:30am with every intention of arriving at Poland Township Park by around 9:30am.  This park is outside of Youngstown and some of you will remember that we were here on June 13th trying to find a Clay-colored Sparrow.  We decided to give it one more try, even though the park is very large, and we still had no specific information about where to look.  It was not meant to be!

We stopped at a service plaza along the Ohio Turnpike for coffee and a pit stop.  When we returned to the car, Mike noticed that we had one very flat tire.  We were able to put air in the tire and got back on the turnpike.  We got off at the first exit about ten miles down the road and immediately stopped at a gas station to add more air.

We did a google search and found an auto repair shop close by in a little town called Newton Falls.  The owner T.C. Smith was very helpful.  It turns out that the tire was beyond repair, and we found out that my Prius does not have a spare tire not even a donut.  We were up a creek without a paddle!  T.C. was able to find the tire we needed in Kent which was about half an hour away.  Next, he called a retiree named Bob and asked if he would be able to drive to Kent and pick up the tire.  Luckily, Bob said yes.

We waited around and had a great conversation with T.C. solving the problems of the world and we were back on the road by about 11:30. We had a quick lunch near Youngstown and finally made it to Poland Township Park about 1:30 with the hot sun beating down.  Once again, we walked all around but couldn’t cover the whole park.  We never saw or heard a Clay-colored Sparrow.  We decided that we are done with this place.  We are not going back.

On the way home, we took a detour to an Amish farm west of Ashland to try and see a Little Blue Heron that had been hanging around a pond for five days.  We arrived and spoke to the family and apparently the Little Blue Heron flew off about 3:30 or 4:00 and we didn’t get there until 5:30pm.  This was a bad luck day all around.

No New Birds.

To my loyal readers – Don’t look for any new posts for at least a week.  Becky and her family will be visiting.
