Tuesday January 24th – Wood Duck

          On Tuesday afternoon I made a solo excursion to the Findlay water treatment plant where  warm water is discharged into the Blanchard River.  Two Wood Ducks had been seen here the day before.  It was about a 45-minute drive, and I was a little conflicted about whether I should chase these birds.  Mike had already seen a Wood Duck this year at Woodlawn Cemetery, so he had one more bird than I did.  Now if I waited until Spring, I would surely see a Wood Duck, but I really didn’t like being one behind Mike.

          So, I took off, found the spot and there were two beautiful male Wood Ducks.  It was very easy and worth the trip.  For now, we are even.  No pictures because I’m not the photographer.

    Wood ducks are gorgeous birds.

    Yes. These were two beautiful males. Wish I had taken a photo.

  February 6 th On the road again Goin’ places that I’ve never been Seein’ things that I may never see again And I can’t wait to get on the road again Willie Nelson After surviving the recent snowstorm and a mild case of cabin fever, I was ready for a road trip.   There have been reports in the past week of a Harris’s Sparrow in Holmes County.   Holmes County is south of Wooster and has a large Amish community.   It is rural, quaint and includes towns like Millersburg, Berlin, Charm and Walnut Creek.   I always love to see the well-kept farms and the residents getting around with their horse and buggy.   It was a 2½ hour trip on lots of country roads and unfortunately we were unsuccessful in locating the sparrow.   As we were leaving the area, a small flock of Eastern Meadowlarks unexpectedly flew right in front of our car.   Normally meadowlarks are not around in the winter, so this was a surprise.   Apparently, meadowlark...

Olive-sided Flycatcher

  May 16 th           Mike and I only had time to do some morning birding because I had an important mah jongg game this afternoon.   We decided to go to the Cannonball Prairie Metropark to look for Grasshopper and Henslow’s Sparrows that can be found here.   We walked out to the grassland area on a very muddy trail due to the recent rain.   Both sparrows were singing and perched up on tufts of grass or little shrubs.   We got good scope views, so this was quick and easy.           Since we had a little extra time, we drove to nearby Oak Openings Metropark and went to an area nicknamed “tornado alley”.   A few years ago, a tornado tore through this part of the park and knocked over a lot of trees.   There are still quite a few dead snags and certain birds seem to like to perch on top of them.   One such bird is an Olive-sided Flycatcher.   We have s...
